The Viking raid on Galicia and Asturias was a big attack by Vikings in the year 844. During this raid, many of their special ships, called longships, were destroyed. After the attack, the Viking fleet had to go back to a place called Aquitaine.
What Happened During the Raid?
In 844, the Vikings were known for attacking many coastal areas in Europe. They landed at a place called A Coruña in Spain. From there, they started to raid the nearby countryside. They burned buildings and took valuable things.
King Ramiro I of Asturias was the ruler of the Kingdom of Asturias at that time. He quickly gathered a strong army to fight against the Vikings. King Ramiro's army managed to defeat the invaders in a huge battle. Many Vikings were killed, and some were taken as prisoners.
The king's forces also burned a large part of the Viking fleet. This big defeat scared the Viking raiders. Because of King Ramiro's strong response, Viking attacks stopped happening in the parts of Spain that he controlled.
