Viktor Kanevskyi's Football Journey
Early Life and First Steps
From a young age, Viktor Kanevskyi loved sports. He enjoyed ice skating, volleyball, and especially football. When he was a student, he played for Kyiv's junior volleyball team. A scout for Dynamo Kyiv also invited him to try out for their junior football team.
Life was tough after the war. Before he turned 16, Viktor started working at a factory in Kyiv. There, he made engravings on cameras. For fun, he played football for the factory team, Mashynobudivnyk. This team later became FC Arsenal Kyiv. Viktor also played for Ukraine's junior team during this time.
Playing for Dynamo Kyiv
In 1953, Viktor Kanevskyi got an amazing chance to play for FC Dynamo Kyiv. He joined other great players like Valeriy Lobanovskyi and Oleh Bazylevych. In 1961, his team made history by winning the Soviet Top League. They were the first team from outside Moscow to win this championship!
At first, Viktor's time at Dynamo was a bit slow. In 1955, he played only one game. But he kept working hard. In 1960, he became the team captain and stayed in that role until he left the club.
World Cup Experience
Viktor Kanevskyi played for the USSR in the 1962 FIFA World Cup in Chile. He remembered meeting the legendary football player Pelé at the final game between Brazil and Czechoslovakia. Viktor even got Pelé's autograph! After the World Cup, a new coach took over the Soviet team, and Viktor was no longer part of it.
Moving On from Dynamo
In 1965, Dynamo Kyiv got a new head coach, Viktor Maslov. Viktor Kanevskyi had a long-term health issue, and he felt he couldn't keep up with the demands of the senior team. So, he decided to leave Dynamo.
After leaving, he briefly coached in Zaporizhia. Then, his former teammate, Yuriy Voinov, invited him to join FC Chornomorets Odesa as a player.
Coaching Career
In 1966, Viktor Kanevskyi decided to stop playing and become a coach. He started his coaching career in Kharkiv. He successfully helped FC Metalist Kharkiv stay in the second tier of Soviet football. His team even finished in the top three in 1968 and 1969.
Later, he moved to Tashkent to be an assistant coach for FC Pakhtakor Tashkent. In 1973, Pakhtakor Tashkent was promoted to the Soviet Top League. For his work, Viktor received an honorary title: Merited Coach of Uzbekistan.
That same year, Valeriy Lobanovskyi asked Viktor to take over as manager of FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. Viktor managed Dnipro for four years in the Soviet Top League. He even led them to the semifinals of the Soviet Cup. In 1987, he helped SC Tavriya Simferopol get promoted to the Soviet First League.
Facing Challenges
Viktor Kanevskyi faced some unfair treatment during his career. He noticed that he was often treated differently because he was Jewish. For example, even after being Dynamo's captain for six years and winning a championship, he was the only one who didn't receive a special sports honor called "Merited Master of Sports." Later, as a coach, he never received the "Merited Coach of Ukraine" title, even though he got a similar title in Uzbekistan for a shorter time.
In 1979, Viktor was invited to coach the Algeria national football team. However, at the last minute, he was told he couldn't go, with no clear reason given. This was very frustrating for him. He tried to get an official title as Merited Coach of Ukraine, but it was denied. Because of these issues, he made a request to leave the country. This caused a big problem, and he was removed from the Communist Party. For several years, he felt like he was being watched. His name was even removed from historical records and photos of Dynamo Kyiv's victories.
Life After the Soviet Union
For a few years, Viktor Kanevskyi was without a job in football. He worked in construction with his brother. In 1983, with help from Valeriy Lobanovskyi, he became the head coach of a new club, FC Dynamo Irpin, which was a farm club for FC Dynamo Kyiv.
In 1988, things changed, and people were allowed to leave the Soviet Union. Viktor and his wife left the country on November 15, 1988, and moved to the United States. In the U.S., Viktor found a job coaching football at a sports school in New York. Later, he even opened his own football school.
