Villaute is a very small village located in the western part of the province of Burgos in Spain. It's about 45 kilometers (28 miles) away from Burgos, which is the capital city of the province. The village is also quite close to the town of Villadiego, only about 5 kilometers (3 miles) away.

Exploring Villaute's History

Villaute has a long and interesting history, dating back many centuries. It was officially founded in the year 1208. Even though it's a small place, it has some important historical buildings that tell us about its past.

Ancient Church of St. Martin

One of the most special places in Villaute is the Church of St. Martin. This church was built way back in the 12th century, which makes it over 800 years old! What makes it truly unique is that it's one of the very few churches in the world that has two apses. An apse is a rounded or polygonal end of a church, usually where the altar is located. Having two is very rare!

The Defensive Tower (Castle)

Another important landmark in Villaute is its old defensive tower. This tower, sometimes called a castle, was built in the 15th century. It was likely used to protect the village a long time ago. Because of its historical importance, this tower was officially recognized as a national monument on April 22, 1949. This means it's a protected site that is important to the history of Spain.

Life in Villaute

Villaute is a very quiet and peaceful place. In 2013, only 13 people lived there, making it one of the smallest villages around. The mayor, Alfonso Fernando López Martínez, helps lead the community. The village is also known for the Brullés River, which flows nearby.
