Vina is a small town in Franklin County, Alabama, United States. In 2010, about 358 people lived there. By 2020, the population was 325.
Some notable people have connections to Vina. Carl Elliott, who was a representative for Alabama in the U.S. Congress from 1949 to 1965, graduated from Vina High School in 1929. Johnny Mack Morrow, who served in the Alabama government from 1990 to 2018, was born in Vina.
Vina officially became a town in 1909.
History of Vina
Vina was first known by a different name: "Jones Crossroads." Later, it was called "New Burleson." In the early 1900s, a train track was built through the area by the Illinois Central Railroad. The community was then renamed "Vina" after the wife of one of the railroad engineers.
Geography of Vina
Vina is located in the southwestern part of Franklin County. Its exact location is 34°22′30″N 88°3′13″W / 34.37500°N 88.05361°W. Alabama State Route 19 goes through the town. This road leads about 7 miles (11 km) northwest to Red Bay and about 21 miles (34 km) south to Hamilton.
The town covers a total area of about 4.8 square miles (12.4 square kilometers), and all of it is land. Vina sits on a special line called the Tennessee Valley Divide. This means that water on the north side of town flows into Bear Creek, which eventually goes into the Tennessee River. Water on the south side of town flows into Hurricane Creek, which is part of the Tombigbee River system.
