Vincent D. Rougeau (born June 17, 1963) is an American legal expert. He is currently the 33rd president of the College of the Holy Cross. He is the first president of the college who is not a priest and the first Black president.

Before this role, Rougeau was the dean of Boston College Law School. He served there from 2011 to 2021. He also led the Association of American Law Schools.

Early Life and Education

Vincent D. Rougeau was born on June 17, 1963. His birthplace was Miami Beach, Florida. His parents were Catholic.

His father, Weldon Rougeau, was a lawyer. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1972. He was involved in the Civil Rights Movement. This movement worked for equal rights for all people. Vincent's mother was a medical professional. She worked at a hospital in Miami Beach.

Growing Up in Different Cities

Rougeau grew up in several cities. These included Chicago, Illinois, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. He also lived in Queens, New York, and Silver Spring, Maryland.

After high school, he earned a scholarship. He attended Brown University. In 1985, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. His major was international relations. He graduated with high honors.

Law School and Early Studies

Next, he went to Harvard Law School. While there, he was an editor. He worked on the Harvard Human Rights Journal. This journal focuses on human rights issues. He received his law degree in 1988. This degree is called a Juris Doctor (J.D.).

Professional Career

After finishing law school, Rougeau became a lawyer. He joined the bar associations in Maryland and Washington, D.C. This meant he could practice law in those areas.

From 1988 to 1991, he worked at a law firm. The firm was Morrison & Foerster in Washington, D.C.. He then became a law professor. He taught at Loyola University Chicago from 1991 to 1997.

Roles at Notre Dame Law School

In 1997, Rougeau joined Notre Dame Law School. He was a visiting associate professor. Later, he became a tenured professor. This means he had a permanent teaching position.

From 1999 to 2002, he was the Associate Dean. This role involved managing academic programs.

Leading Boston College Law School

In 2011, Rougeau became the Dean of Boston College Law School. A dean is like a principal for a college department. He led the law school for ten years.

In July 2021, he took on a new role. He became the President of the College of the Holy Cross. As president, he wanted to increase diversity. He also aimed to improve the college's connection with the city of Worcester.
