A Look at Vincentia's Past

Early Days and Traditional Owners

Long ago, the traditional owners of the land around Vincentia were the Yuin people. They were sometimes called the 'Jervis Bay tribe'. These people are also known as the Wandandian people. They spoke a language called Dharamba.

How Vincentia Got Its Name

Vincentia used to have different names. First, it was called 'South Huskisson', and later 'The Old Township'. It started as a port town in 1841. It was the end point of 'The Wool Road' which came from Nerriga.

The land for South Huskisson was owned by Edward Deas Thompson. In 1842, a wharf was built for ships. But the road and port didn't work out as planned. By 1867, the town was empty. By the 1930s, almost nothing was left of the old town. However, many of the original street names are still used today.

In 1952, a developer named Henry Halloran renamed the town Vincentia. He named it after St Vincent County. This county was named after John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent. John Jervis became an Earl because of his victory at the Battle of Cape St Vincent. Jervis Bay was also named after him.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Vincentia became popular again. People started buying land to build holiday homes, also known as "weekenders". This helped the town become a favorite holiday spot.
