What Does the Vinton Building Look Like?
The Vinton Building was designed by a famous architect named Albert Kahn. It was finished in 1917. This building is 12 stories tall, reaching about 172 feet (52 meters) high. It also has two basement levels, making it 14 floors in total.
The building was first used for offices and retail stores. It was built in a style called neo-classical. This style often looks like ancient Greek or Roman buildings. The main material used for the Vinton Building is terra cotta. This is a type of baked clay.
The front of the building has a special pointed wall at the top. This wall looks a bit like the roof of old classical temples.

How Was the Vinton Building Renovated?
In 2006, the Vinton Building went through a big renovation. The goal was to change it into a building with lofts. Lofts are large, open apartments.
The plan for the renovation included:
- Commercial spaces on the first two floors.
- One loft apartment on each of the ten floors above.
The renovation started in December 2005. The basement was turned into a parking area. The ground floor was for shops, and the second floor was for businesses. The top ten floors were planned to become one or two apartments per floor. However, by 2010, the renovation had stopped. The building did not open as planned.
In 2013, Dan Gilbert bought the Vinton Building. He owns many properties in Downtown Detroit.
