Virginia Gutiérrez de Pineda was born in 1921 in a town called El Socorro, in Colombia. She grew up to become a famous anthropologist. An anthropologist is a scientist who studies human societies and cultures.
Her Education and Studies
Virginia went to many schools to learn. She studied at the National Pedagogy Institute and the Escuela Normal Superior of Colombia. In 1944, she earned her degree in Anthropology.
Later, she traveled to the United States to study more. She went to the University of California, Berkeley. There, she focused on Social and Medical Anthropology. In 1962, she earned her PhD in Social Sciences and Economics.
Helping Start Sociology in Colombia
In 1960, Virginia helped create something very special. She worked with other smart people to start the first Faculty of Sociology in Latin America. This was at the National University of Colombia. Sociology is the study of how people live together in groups and societies.
Awards and Recognition
Virginia received many awards for her important work. In 1967, she was named "Woman of the Year" in Colombia. The next year, she won the Alejandro Ángel Escobar Award. She also received two special medals for her achievements.
A big honor came in 2015. The Colombian Bank of the Republic decided to put her picture on the $10,000 peso bill. This was to celebrate all her contributions to Colombia. The new bills started being used in 2016.
On November 4, 2019, Google celebrated her 98th birthday. They made a special Google Doodle in her honor.
