History of Virginville
The exact reason for the name "Virginville" is a bit of a mystery! Some people think the name is an English translation of an old Native American word. Others believe it was named after the untouched, "virgin" forests that used to cover the area. There's also a theory that "Virgin" might be another way to translate the name of Maiden Creek, a stream that flows through the community and also connects with Sacony Creek.
Virginville Historic District
The community was officially named the Virginville Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. This special district includes 80 buildings that were built between 1874 and 1930. These buildings include homes, shops, and other important structures. They show off different popular building styles from that time, like Gothic Revival and Italianate.
Even though most buildings in the district are homes, some non-residential buildings are very notable. These include The Creamery, built around 1875, and St. Paul's Chapel from 1903. The Virginville Hotel, built in 1885, is also a key part of the district. Other important buildings are the post office, built around 1930, and Balthasar's Garage from 1921.
