Discover the Viskan River
The Viskan River is about 140 kilometers (87 miles) long. It is one of the main rivers in this part of Sweden. The river flows through different types of land, from forests to cities. It plays a key role in the local environment and for the communities along its banks.
Where Does Viskan Begin and End?
The Viskan River starts in Lake Tolken. This lake is located in the Ulricehamn Municipality in Västra Götaland County. The river begins at an elevation of 226 meters (741 feet) above sea level. From there, it flows downhill towards the coast.
The journey of the Viskan ends when it flows into Klosterfjorden. This is a bay that connects to the Kattegatt sea. The mouth of the river is located in Varberg Municipality in Halland County. At this point, the river is at sea level, which is 0 meters elevation.
Journey Through the Landscape
As the Viskan River travels, it passes through two different counties. These are Västra Götaland County and Halland County. A major city along its path is Borås. The river runs right through the city, making it a central feature.
The area around the river is often called the Viska Valley, or Viskadalen. This valley is known for its natural beauty and the way the river has shaped the land over time.
Water Flow and Its Basin
The Viskan River has a large watershed. A watershed is the entire area of land where all the water drains into a single river or lake. The Viskan's watershed covers about 2,202 square kilometers (850 square miles). This means a lot of rain and snowmelt from this area eventually flows into the Viskan.
On average, the river's discharge is about 34 cubic meters (1,200 cubic feet) of water per second. This measurement tells us how much water flows past a certain point in the river each second. It shows that the Viskan is a strong and steady river.
Rivers Joining Viskan
Along its journey, the Viskan River is joined by several smaller rivers. These are called tributaries. Tributaries add more water to the main river, making it larger.
- On the left side, the main rivers that flow into Viskan are Häggån and Slottsån.
- On the right side, the main rivers joining Viskan are Munkån and Surteån.
These smaller rivers collect water from their own areas and bring it to the Viskan.
