Vitray was once a small commune in central France. A commune is like a small town or local area with its own local government. Vitray was located in the Allier department, which is a part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
On January 1, 2017, Vitray joined with another commune to form a new, larger commune called Meaulne-Vitray. This means Vitray is no longer a separate commune on its own.
Where is Vitray Located?
Vitray is found in the heart of France. It is part of the Allier department. The closest large town is Montluçon. The area around Vitray is mostly rural, meaning it has a lot of countryside.
The land in Vitray is not completely flat. Its elevation, or height above sea level, ranges from about 194 meters (636 feet) to 312 meters (1,024 feet). The average height is around 283 meters (928 feet). The total area of Vitray was about 29 square kilometers (11 square miles).
How Many People Lived in Vitray?
Over the years, the number of people living in Vitray slowly changed. In 1962, there were 208 residents. By 1975, the population had dropped to 149 people. This trend continued, and by 1999, only 130 people lived there.
In 2013, just before it merged, Vitray had 103 residents. The most recent count from 2021, for the new commune of Meaulne-Vitray, shows 134 people. This shows how small communities can change over time.
