Vla () is a creamy, sweet dairy product from the Netherlands. It is made from fresh milk and is similar to a thick custard. People in the Netherlands often enjoy vla as a dessert or a snack.

What is Vla?

Vla is a popular treat in Dutch homes. It has a smooth texture, a bit like pudding, but it's usually thinner. You can eat it plain, or add toppings like fruit, sprinkles, or whipped cream. It's a simple, tasty dessert that many Dutch families love.

History of Vla

The word vla was first written down a very long time ago, in the 13th century. Back then, it meant any creamy filling used on top of cakes or other baked goods. The word vlaai, which is a type of pie, is related to vla. Over time, vla became the name for the delicious milk-based dessert we know today.

How is Vla Made?

Traditionally, vla is made with fresh milk, eggs, and sugar. The eggs help to make it thick and creamy. However, some companies that make vla for stores now use cornstarch instead of eggs. Cornstarch is a powder that also helps to thicken the vla, giving it a smooth texture.

Flavors of Vla

Vla comes in many different and exciting flavors! The most popular flavor is vanilla, which has a sweet and classic taste. But you can also find vla in flavors like chocolate, caramel, banana, orange, and apple. This variety means there's a vla flavor for almost everyone to enjoy.

The Special Bottle Scraper

For a long time, vla was sold in glass bottles. Because vla is thick, it was hard to get all of it out of the bottle! So, people invented a special tool called a bottle scraper (or flessenschraper in Dutch). This tool was designed to scrape every last bit of vla from the inside of the bottle. Even though vla is now usually sold in cartons, these handy scrapers are still common in Dutch kitchens.

Vla Around the World

While vla is a very typical Dutch product, it has started to become known in other countries too. In 2010, a company called Campina began selling vla in some stores in Wallonia (a region in Belgium) and Germany. This means more people can now try this unique Dutch dessert!
