Vladimir Mikhailovich Shuralyov (Russian: Владимир Михайлович Шуралёв) was an important military officer. He served in the Soviet and later Russian armies. Born on April 3, 1935, he became an Army General. He held many high-ranking positions during his career.
Shuralyov joined the Soviet Army in 1955. He trained to become an expert in tanks and armored vehicles. He studied at the Tashkent Higher Tank Command School. Early Life and Military Training
Vladimir Shuralyov was born in 1935 in a town called Kovrov. This town is in the Vladimir Oblast region of Russia. At that time, it was part of the Soviet Union. Before joining the army, he worked on a railway construction project. He was in charge of a repair station.
In 1955, after finishing college, he joined the Soviet Army. He went to the Tashkent Higher Tank Command School. He graduated in 1958. After his training, he was sent to serve with Soviet forces in Germany. In 1959, he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Leading Tank Armies
Shuralyov continued his military education. In 1965, he graduated from the Military Academy of the Armored Forces. After this, he began to lead tank units. He commanded a tank battalion in Ukraine. By 1970, he was leading an entire tank regiment.
He also worked as a chief of staff for different divisions. These roles took him to various military districts across the Soviet Union. In 1975, he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff. This is a very high-level military school. After that, he commanded a tank division in the Baltic region.
In 1979, he became the commander of the 8th Tank Army. This army was stationed in Ukraine. A year later, in 1980, he took command of the 2nd Guards Tank Army. This was a very important army unit in Germany. By 1984, he was promoted to first deputy commander-in-chief of all Soviet forces in Germany. He became a lieutenant-general in 1981.
High-Ranking Commands
In February 1985, Shuralyov was given command of the Belorussian Military District. This was a large military region. He was promoted to colonel-general in April of that year. In 1989, he became a representative for the Warsaw Pact forces. He worked with the army of East Germany. He also took part in important talks about limiting weapons.
From 1990 to 1991, he served as a Deputy Minister of Defence. He was also the Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Defence. His last active role was leading the Vystrel courses. These courses trained high-ranking officers. He retired from military service in April 1992.
Life After Retirement
After retiring from the army, General Shuralyov continued to contribute. He became a leading analyst for the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation. He also worked as a consultant for the General Staff of the Armed Forces. This meant he advised top military leaders.
He was also involved in politics. He was a member of the political party A Just Russia. In February 2020, he attended the funeral of Dmitry Yazov. Yazov was the last Marshal of the Soviet Union. The funeral took place at the Federal Military Memorial Cemetery.
Passing and Awards
Vladimir Shuralyov passed away in Moscow on March 2, 2020. He was 84 years old. His funeral was held on March 5 at the Federal Military Memorial Cemetery. Many people attended, including high-ranking military officials.
