Volcanoville is a small place in El Dorado County, California. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a neighborhood or group of homes that doesn't have its own city government. It's located about 6 miles (10 kilometers) north-northeast of Georgetown. Volcanoville sits high up, at an elevation of 2,992 feet (912 meters).
About Volcanoville
Volcanoville had a post office that helped people send and receive mail. This post office was open from 1930 until 1953. It was an important part of the community for many years.
What's in a Name?
The name "Volcanoville" comes from a misunderstanding long ago. Early miners in the area thought a nearby mountain was an extinct volcano. An extinct volcano is one that is no longer active and is not expected to erupt again. Even though they were mistaken, the name stuck!
Learning and Schools
Children and teens in Volcanoville attend schools managed by the Black Oak Mine Unified School District. This school district helps make sure students in the area get a good education.
The Mosquito Fire
In September and October 2022, a very large wildfire called the Mosquito Fire burned near Volcanoville. This fire caused a lot of damage in the area. Sadly, some buildings in Volcanoville were destroyed by the flames. The fire burned in the Tahoe and Eldorado National Forests. These forests are located in Placer and El Dorado counties in California.
