Vya is a small ghost town located in Washoe County, in northwestern Nevada, United States. It sits about 10 miles (16 km) east of the California state line. The town is north of Forty Nine Canyon.
Not much remains of Vya today. The town mostly disappeared in the 1920s. You can still see two old wooden buildings: the Vya Post Office and the Library. The Vya Post Office was open from September 1910 until October 1941. The settlement was named after Vya Wimer. She was the first baby of European heritage born in that valley.
Life in Vya Today
The area around Vya has changed over time. It is now home to the Old Yella Dog Ranch. This ranch is a working guest ranch. It offers places for RVs and camping.
A Story of Survival
In the winter of 1993, a young family faced a tough challenge near Vya. Jim Stolpa, his wife, and their baby got stuck in heavy snow. They were driving through northern Nevada. Jim walked for almost 30 hours, covering about 50 miles (80 km). He was finally found near Vya.
Their amazing story of survival was made into a movie. It is called Snowbound: The Jim and Jennifer Stolpa Story. Vya remains a ghost town even today.
Climate
Vya has a steppe climate. This type of climate is often dry with hot summers and cold winters. It is known as BSk in the Köppen climate classification system.
