Võ Chí Công, born Võ Toàn, was an important Vietnamese political leader. He served as the Chairman of the Council of State of Vietnam from 1987 to 1992. This role was similar to being the President of the country.
He was also a key member of the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam. He held a high position there from 1962 to 1976. Võ Chí Công was a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Early Life and Political Beginnings
Võ Chí Công was born in 1912 in a place called Quảng Nam, which was then part of French Indochina. His father, Võ Nghiệm, was a strong supporter of Vietnam. He later joined the Communist Party.
Võ Chí Công's mother, Nguyễn Thị Thân, was honored as a "Vietnamese heroic mother." He grew up learning about patriotism. He was inspired by many important Vietnamese figures.
Joining the Fight for Freedom
In 1930, Võ Chí Công started to get involved in politics. He joined with other Vietnamese nationalists. These leaders were against the French colonial rule in Vietnam.
In 1935, he joined the Communist Party of Vietnam. This party was led by Hồ Chí Minh. During World War II, he fought against the French.
Leadership in Central Vietnam
In October 1941, Võ Chí Công was given a new role. He was put in charge of a special party committee. This committee oversaw provinces from Đà Nẵng to Phú Yên.
French rulers tried to stop the revolutionary movement. Many party officials were arrested. Võ Chí Công had to move to different areas to stay safe.
Building a Stronger Party
In 1942, the leader of the Quảng Nam Party Committee was arrested. So, Võ Chí Công helped create a new committee. This committee combined three smaller groups.
Võ Chí Công was chosen as the new Party Secretary for Quảng Nam. But in October 1943, he was also arrested. He was sentenced to life in prison. Later, his sentence was changed to 25 years. He was sent away to a prison in Buôn Ma Thuột.
Release and the August Revolution
On March 9, 1945, Japan took control of French Indochina. The Japanese military released many political prisoners. Võ Chí Công was one of them.
After his release, he went back to Quảng Nam. He helped lead an uprising against the French government. Thanks to his efforts, the uprising in Quảng Nam was successful. It started on August 17, 1945, in Hội An.
Quảng Nam was one of the first four provinces to win back its government. After this success, Võ Chí Công became the Chief Justice of Quảng Nam - Đà Nẵng.
Founding Member of the Vietcong
After the First Indochina War, Võ Chí Công continued his important work. He became a Deputy Secretary for the 5th Region's Party Committee. In 1960, he became a member of the Central Committee Party.
In 1961, he helped create the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam. This group was also known as the Vietcong. He became its Deputy Chairman.
Key Role in the Vietnam War
Later, he became the Deputy Secretary of the Central Office for South Vietnam (COSVN). He was a very important leader for the communist party in South Vietnam. This was during the Vietnam War.
After Vietnam became one united country in 1976, Võ Chí Công was given a seat on the national Politburo. This is a very powerful group of leaders.
Government Roles and Presidency
As a Politburo member, Võ Chí Công held many important jobs in the government. He was the Minister of Fisheries from 1976 to 1977. Then, he was the Minister of Agriculture from 1977 to 1978. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1976 to 1982.
In 1987, he became the Chairman of the Council of State of Vietnam. This was the highest position in the country at that time. He served as president until 1992.
After his time as president, Võ Chí Công became an advisor. He advised the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. He held this advisory role until 1997.
Later Life and Passing
Võ Chí Công passed away in Hồ Chí Minh City on September 8, 2011. He was 99 years old.
The Communist Party of Vietnam held a special televised state funeral for him. This was to honor his long and important career in politics.
