History of Majic 102.3
How WMMJ Started
In 1987, Cathy Hughes bought WMMJ. She changed the music from "easy listening" to "Urban Oldies," calling it "Majic 102." For over 20 years, the station has mostly kept this music style. It plays songs for adults, and many people in Washington, D.C. listen to it regularly.
Popular Shows and Changes
In 1999, WMMJ started broadcasting the Tom Joyner Morning Show. This was a very popular radio show. Later, in 2008, the station also had comedian Mo'Nique on in the afternoons. She left in 2009 to focus on her acting and comedy career.
On June 23, 2010, WMMJ made some big changes. They hired new hosts like John Monds and Courtney Hicks. Later, Michel Wright, Adimu, and Donnie Simpson joined the team. These changes helped the station keep its music style fresh.
The Return of Donnie Simpson
On August 3, 2015, WMMJ announced a new slogan: The Real Sound of the DMV. They also shared exciting news: Donnie Simpson would return to radio! Donnie Simpson is a famous radio host who had retired in 2010. His show, The Donnie Simpson Show, started on August 17, 2015. You can hear it Monday through Friday from 3 to 7 PM. In January 2016, Russ Parr also moved to WMMJ to host a morning show, replacing Tom Joyner.
Expanding the Broadcast Area
To reach more listeners in the southern and eastern parts of Washington, Radio One bought another station called WWXT. This station is now known as WDCJ. On May 1, 2017, WDCJ began playing the same music as WMMJ. This helps Majic 102.3 reach an even bigger audience.
