The W train's yellow symbol

The W Broadway Local is a subway line in New York City. It's part of the city's big subway system. Its special symbol, called a "bullet," is colored bright yellow. This is because it mainly runs on the BMT Broadway Line in Manhattan. The W train also travels on the BMT Astoria Line in Queens. To get between Queens and Manhattan, it goes under the East River through the 60th Street Tunnel. The W train used to run in Brooklyn until 2004. After a break, the W train started running again on April 7, 2020. It had been stopped for about six years because of money problems at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, also known as the MTA.

Where Does the W Train Go?

The W train runs on weekdays from 6:00 AM until 11:30 PM. Its main route connects the BMT Astoria Line in Queens with the BMT Broadway Line in Manhattan. The train's last stop to the south is Whitehall Street–South Ferry.

During busy morning rush hours, some W trains start their journey from the Coney Island train yard. These trains serve the 86th Street subway station in Brooklyn, using the Sea Beach Line. They then travel through the Montague Street Tunnel to reach their final stop at Astoria–Ditmars Boulevard in Queens. In the evening rush hours, some trains go the other way, from Queens to 86th Street in Brooklyn.
