Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Dr. William Andrew Horsley Gantt (born in Wingina, Virginia in 1892, died in 1980) was an American scientist who studied how the body and mind work together. He was known as a physiologist, which means he studied how living things work, and a psychologist, meaning he studied the mind and behavior. He earned a science degree from the University of North Carolina and later became a doctor after studying at the University of Virginia.

Who Was Dr. William Gantt?

In 1922, while training to be a doctor at a hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Gantt took a break. He joined the American Relief Administration, a group that helped people in need. From 1922 to 1923, he worked in Petrograd, Russia. There, he studied how a lack of food, called a famine, affected people's health. During this time, he met a very famous scientist named Ivan Pavlov.

Working with Ivan Pavlov

Dr. Gantt was so interested in Pavlov's work that he went back to Petrograd in 1925. He studied directly with Pavlov at the Institute of Experimental Medicine. Pavlov was famous for his research on "conditioned reflexes," which are learned responses. For example, Pavlov showed how dogs could learn to drool at the sound of a bell if they associated it with food.

Dr. Gantt helped share Pavlov's ideas with the world. He translated many of Pavlov's important books into English. These included "Lectures on Conditioned Reflexes" and another book called "Lectures on Conditioned Reflexes: Conditioned Reflexes and Psychiatry."

Important Discoveries and Awards

Dr. Gantt continued his own research on how our bodies and minds react to different situations. He published his own important work called "Experimental Basis for Neurotic Behavior." This book explored how stress and experiences can affect our behavior and mental health.

His amazing research was recognized with a big honor. He received the Lasker Award in 1946. This award is given to people who make major discoveries in medical science. Later, in 1970, he was even nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, one of the highest awards a scientist can receive.

Founding Research Labs

Dr. Gantt was also a leader in setting up new research centers. He started the Pavlovian Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. This lab focused on studying conditioned reflexes, just like Pavlov did. He also founded the Psychophysiological Research Laboratory at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Perry Point, Maryland. This lab helped study the connection between the mind and body, especially for veterans.

A Challenge and a Society

In 1953, Dr. Gantt faced a difficult time. He was temporarily suspended from his work at the Veterans Administration. However, he was later cleared of any wrongdoing and was able to return to his position.

In 1955, he started a group called the Pavlovian Society. This society brought together scientists who were interested in Pavlov's ideas and continued to study conditioned reflexes. Dr. Gantt was the president of this society for ten years, until 1965.

Famous Friends

Dr. Gantt knew many interesting and famous people. Some of his notable friends included writers like John Dos Passos, Ogden Nash, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and H. L. Mencken.
