Wacky Races (チキチキマシン猛レース, Chiki Chiki Machine Mou Race) is a fun platform game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It was developed and published by Atlus. This game brings the exciting world of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Wacky Races to life. In the game, you get to play as Muttley, the famous dog, and his tricky owner, Dick Dastardly.

It's good to know that there were other games also called Wacky Races. An unrelated game for Amiga and Atari ST came out in 1991. Also, a racing game with the same name was released in 2000.

How to Play the Game

In the Wacky Races NES game, you control Muttley. Your goal is to guide him through different areas. There are three main areas: Hip Hop, Splish Splash, and Go Go America. You can choose which area to play from a map screen. To finish the game, you need to complete all three areas.

Exploring the Stages

The first two areas, Hip Hop and Splish Splash, each have three stages. The Go Go America area is a bit longer, with four stages. As Muttley, you can jump to get over obstacles. You start with a short-ranged bite attack to deal with enemies.

Muttley's Cool Moves

As you play, you can collect bones. These bones are super helpful! You can use them to get new abilities for Muttley. It's a bit like how you choose power-ups in the Gradius game series. You can get a bomb attack to clear enemies. There's also a flying "bark shot" that lets Muttley shoot from a distance. Muttley can even glide using his tail, which helps him cross gaps. Collecting bones can also give Muttley extra health, making him tougher.

Battling the Racers

Each of the ten stages in the game ends with a boss battle. You will face off against one of the other ten racers from the Wacky Races cartoon. When you defeat a boss, you clear that stage. Once you defeat all the bosses in an area (three or four, depending on the area), you can move on to the next one.

The game also features a cool version of the theme song from the Japanese cartoon show. You can hear it on the title screen!
