Wagnelée (pronounced "Wag-nuh-lay") is a small village in Belgium. It's part of a region called Wallonia. Wagnelée is also a district within the larger town of Fleurus. It's located in the province of Hainaut.
For a long time, Wagnelée was its own separate town. But in 1977, many smaller towns in Belgium joined together. This was called the "fusion of Belgian municipalities." Wagnelée became part of Fleurus during this time.
History of Wagnelée
Wagnelée and the Battle of Ligny
In 1815, Wagnelée played an important role in a famous battle. This was the Battle of Ligny. It happened just before the even more famous Battle of Waterloo.
The battle was fought between two big armies. One was the Prussian army, led by General Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher. The other was the French army, led by Napoleon Bonaparte.
Wagnelée was on the far right side of the Prussian army's battle line. The Prussian soldiers held onto Wagnelée throughout the entire battle. This shows how important the village was in their defense.
