Wagon Mound is a small village located in Mora County, New Mexico, United States. It gets its name from a nearby butte (a flat-topped hill) that looks like a covered wagon. This natural landmark was very important for early travelers on the Santa Fe Trail.
The village was once a lonely ranch that helped traders and wagon trains. People say the shape of the butte reminds them of a Conestoga wagon, which was a common type of covered wagon. In 2020, about 266 people lived here. For many years, the village was also known as Santa Clara.
Wagon Mound is found on the wide plains of northeastern New Mexico. You can see many brightly painted houses and shops there. Interstate 25 runs along the west side of town, giving a good view of the village. While Wagon Mound is not growing very fast, new buildings have appeared near the interstate.
