Wainaku is on the eastern side of the big island of Hawaii. It sits right next to Hilo Bay. The town of Hilo is to its south, and Paukaa is to its north. The main road through the community is Hawaii Route 19.
The total area of Wainaku is about 3.8 square kilometers (1.47 square miles). Most of this area, about 3.4 square kilometers (1.32 square miles), is land. The rest, about 0.4 square kilometers (0.15 square miles), is water.
