Waldemar de Brito (born May 17, 1913 – died February 21, 1979) was a famous Brazilian footballer. He played as a forward, which means he was a player whose main job was to score goals. Waldemar played for many different clubs in Brazil and Argentina. He also played for the Brazilian national team.

Waldemar de Brito is especially remembered for discovering the legendary footballer Pelé. He spotted Pelé when he was a young boy and helped him start his amazing career. Waldemar's brother, Petronilho de Brito, was also a footballer.

Waldemar was born in São Paulo, Brazil. He was a very skilled player, often playing as an inside forward or centre forward. These positions are key for attacking and scoring goals.

Early Club Career in Brazil

Waldemar started his football journey with local clubs like Syrio and Independência. He also played for São Paulo da Floresta, which is known today as São Paulo FC. During his time with São Paulo, he became the top goal scorer in the Rio-São Paulo Tournament. He scored an impressive 21 goals!

After this, he had a short time playing for Botafogo.

Playing in Argentina and Return to Brazil

In 1935, Waldemar moved to Argentina to play for San Lorenzo de Almagro. This team is part of the top football league in Argentina.

In 1936, he came back to Brazil. This time, he joined Flamengo, another big club. He later returned to San Lorenzo for a few years. In 1942, he came back to São Paulo to play for São Paulo FC again. He also played for Portuguesa de Desportos and Palmeiras. He finished his playing career in 1946 with Portuguesa Santista.

Playing for Brazil: International Matches

Waldemar de Brito was a key player for the Brazilian national team. He played 18 matches for his country and scored 18 goals. This means he scored a goal in almost every game he played!

The 1934 FIFA World Cup

He was part of the Brazilian team that played in the 1934 World Cup. In this tournament, Brazil was knocked out in the first round by Spain. During that match, Waldemar took a penalty kick for Brazil. However, the Spanish goalkeeper, Ricardo Zamora, managed to save his shot.

Life After Playing: Discovering a Legend

After he stopped playing football, Waldemar de Brito became a scout. A scout is someone who looks for new, talented young players. He worked for a project at Bauru Atlético Clube.

Finding Pelé

In 1954, Waldemar found a very special young boy named Edson Arantes do Nascimento. He was so impressed by Pelé's skills that he took him to Santos FC, a famous Brazilian club. Waldemar famously predicted that Pelé would become the greatest footballer in the world. And he was right!

While Waldemar was a talented player himself, his most important contribution to football history is probably discovering and guiding Pelé. This act made him a very notable figure in Brazilian football.
