The Wallooskee River is a river in northwest Oregon, United States. It is also sometimes called the Walluski River. This river is about 10 miles (16 km) long. It flows into the Youngs River, which then flows into the larger Columbia River.

The Wallooskee River helps drain a small area of land. This area is in the foothills of the Coast Range mountains. It is located close to where the Columbia River meets the ocean.

Where the River Flows

The Wallooskee River starts southwest of Astoria. This area is in northern Clatsop County. The river then flows mostly west, taking a winding path.

About 1 mile (1.6 km) before it reaches its end, another smaller river joins it. This is the Little Wallooskee River. The Little Wallooskee River flows for about 2 miles (3.2 km) before meeting the Wallooskee River.

The Wallooskee River finally flows into the Youngs River. This happens at the south end of Youngs Bay. This spot is about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Astoria.

About the Name Wallooskee

The name of the river was once spelled "Walluski." However, in 1975, the United States Board on Geographic Names officially changed it to "Wallooskee." The name comes from "Wallooska," who was a member of the Chinookan Native American people. In 1851, Wallooska was the only surviving member of a small group of Chinookan people who lived near the river.

Even though there isn't a town officially named Walluski, people who live in the area still think of the "Olney-Walluski area" as a community. Long ago, in 1950, the Walluski area was even counted as a special area for the census.

There was also a Walluski School in the area back in 1892. This school was near a farm that belonged to Oregon State University. Later, this farm became part of Clatsop Community College. Today, it is the place where the Clatsop County Fairgrounds are located.
