Walter Edgar Hergesheimer (born January 8, 1927 – died September 27, 2014) was a Canadian ice hockey player. He was known as a talented forward who played for several teams during his career.
Wally Hergesheimer's Hockey Journey
Wally Hergesheimer faced a challenge early on. In 1944, he had an accident at work. He lost two fingers on his right hand. Despite this, he went on to have a great hockey career.
Wally started his journey in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the New York Rangers. He also played for the Chicago Black Hawks. His time in the NHL lasted from 1952 to 1959.
Wally wasn't the only hockey player in his family. His older brother, Phil Hergesheimer, was also a professional hockey player. Wally passed away in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 2014. He was 87 years old.
Awards and Achievements
Wally Hergesheimer earned many honors during his hockey career:
- He was named to the USHL First All-Star Team in 1950.
- He made the AHL Second All-Star Team in 1951.
- In 1951, he won the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award. This award is given to the best rookie (new player) in the AHL.
- Wally played in the NHL All-Star Game twice, in 1953 and 1956.
- He is an Honoured Member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.
- He is also an Honoured Member of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
- In a 2009 book called 100 Ranger Greats, Wally was ranked as the 92nd best player in the history of the New York Rangers.
