Walter Herbert Streuli (born September 26, 1935 – died January 19, 2017) was an American professional baseball player. He played as a catcher, which is a player who squats behind home plate to receive pitches. Walt Streuli played in six Major League Baseball (MLB) games over three seasons with the Detroit Tigers from 1954 to 1956.
Streuli was 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m) tall and weighed 195 pounds (88 kg). He threw and batted with his right hand. Before playing professionally, he went to Southwestern College (now Rhodes College) in Memphis.
Walt Streuli's Baseball Career
Walt Streuli's professional baseball journey lasted for six seasons. He played from 1953 to 1957, and then briefly returned in 1961.
His MLB Debut
Streuli made his first MLB appearance in 1954, just before his 19th birthday. It was near the end of the baseball season. He came into the game to replace another catcher, Red Wilson, in the seventh inning. An inning is a part of a baseball game.
In this game, the Detroit Tigers lost to the Cleveland Indians. Streuli handled the ball once in the field without making an error. An error is a mistake a player makes. He also got a base on balls, which means the pitcher threw four pitches outside the strike zone. He faced a famous pitcher named Early Wynn.
More Time with the Tigers
Walt Streuli had a couple more short chances to play with the Detroit Tigers. He played two games in September 1955. Then, he played three more games in April 1956. After these games, he was sent back to play in the minor leagues.
In his total of six MLB games, Streuli had 12 turns at batting. He managed to get three hits, which means he hit the ball and reached a base safely. Two of his hits were doubles, where he hit the ball and reached second base.
Later Life
Walt Streuli passed away on January 19, 2017. He was 81 years old when he died in Greensboro, North Carolina.
