Walter Gex went to college at the University of Mississippi. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in 1962. After that, he continued his studies at the University of Mississippi Law School. He received his law degree, called a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), in 1963.
His Early Career as a Lawyer
After finishing law school, Walter Gex started working as a private lawyer.
- From 1963 to 1972, he practiced law in Jackson, Mississippi.
- Then, from 1972 to 1986, he moved his law practice back to his hometown of Bay St. Louis.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In 1986, Walter J. Gex III was chosen for a very important job.
Nomination and Confirmation
On January 29, 1986, President Ronald Reagan nominated him to be a new judge. This new judge position was for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi. The United States Senate then had to approve his nomination. They confirmed him on February 25, 1986. He officially started his work as a judge on February 26, 1986.
Senior Status
On March 24, 2004, Judge Gex took on what is called "senior status". This means that a judge who is older and has served for a long time can reduce their workload. They still hear cases but not as many as a full-time judge.
His Passing
Walter J. Gex III passed away on November 12, 2020. He died in Diamondhead, Mississippi.
