Walter Mussing (1916-1990) was a talented Australian rugby league player. He was known for his skills on the field during the 1930s and 1940s.

Early Life and Family

Walter Mussing was born in 1916. His father was a share-farmer from Murwillumbah, New South Wales. A share-farmer works on land owned by someone else and shares the crops or profits. Walter was one of eight children in his family.

Family Connections

Walter Mussing was the older brother of Faith Bandler. She became a very important Australian civil rights activist. She worked hard to make things fair for everyone.

Starting Rugby League

Walter began his rugby league journey in Brisbane, Queensland. He often played with the Queensland 'All Blacks' teams. These teams were special groups of players from that time. He even played alongside another former St. George Dragons player, Walter Slockie.

Rugby League Career

Walter Mussing joined the St. George rugby league club in 1945. He came from the local Tweed Heads club. He quickly made a big impression at the Dragons.

Making an Impact

Walter was known for scoring many tries. A try is how players score points in rugby league. In his first year, he was the club's top try scorer. This means he scored more tries than anyone else on his team. Fans really liked watching him play.

The 1946 Season

The next year, 1946, was fantastic for the Dragons. Walter was a key player in their success. However, he sadly missed the 1946 Grand Final. This is the final championship game of the season. He broke his collar-bone in one of the last games of the year. A collar-bone is a bone near your shoulder. Because of his injury, a young player named Chick Donnelley took his place in the team.

Later Years

Walter stayed with the St. George club for the 1947 season. After that, he went back to Queensland in 1948. He then played for the Fingal All Blacks team.

Later Life

Walter Mussing passed away on January 27, 1990. He was 73 years old.
