Walter was the younger son of a man named Hugh de Moravia. His family had a long history in Scotland. Walter's grandfather was William. William was a very important person in his time.
How the Family Got Their Lands
Walter's grandfather, William, received a special gift from the King of Scotland. This king was William I of Scotland, also known as William the Lion. Between 1165 and 1171, King William gave William, son of Freskin, control over two areas of land. These lands were Strathbrock in West Lothian and Duffus in Moray.
When Walter's father, Hugh, passed away, Walter inherited these lands. This meant he became the new Lord of Duffus and Strathbrock.
Walter's Own Family
Walter de Moravia married a woman named Euphemia. She was the daughter of Fearchar, Earl of Ross. The Earl of Ross was another powerful leader in Scotland.
Walter and Euphemia had a son named Freskin. When Walter died, his son Freskin took over as the next Lord. This shows how titles and lands were passed down through families in those times.
