Wang Ja-ji (Hangul: 왕자지; Hanja: 王字之) was an important person in Korea during the Goryeo dynasty (from 918 to 1392). He was born in 1066 and passed away on March 30, 1122.
Wang Ja-ji was many things: a politician who helped run the country, a general who led armies, a musician, and an ambassador who represented Goryeo to other nations. He played a big part in training soldiers and helping the country's defense.
About Wang Ja-ji
Early Life and Family
Wang Ja-ji came from a place called Haeju in Hwanghaedo. His family name was originally Bak, but his great-grandfather, Bak Yu, changed it to Wang.
He also helped his brother-in-law, Wang Gukmo, during a time of change in the military. After this, Wang Ja-ji was given an important job called Jeonjunggam.
A Life of Service
During the rule of King Sukjong, Wang Ja-ji became a "naesi," which was like a secretary or close advisor to the king.
In 1108, he became a Byeongmaban-gwan. This role meant he worked closely with General Yun Gwan. General Yun Gwan was famous for his military actions, and Wang Ja-ji was part of his team. From 1100 to 1108, Wang Ja-ji helped train many soldiers, about seventeen thousand Jurchen soldiers.
Wang Ja-ji held many different government jobs throughout his life. These included roles like Jeonjungsogam, Yebinsigyeong, and Chumilwonjijusa. These were all important positions in the government of Goryeo.
Diplomatic Missions
In 1115, Wang Ja-ji was appointed to Ibusangseo. He was also sent as an envoy, or ambassador, to China's Song Dynasty. This meant he traveled to China to represent Goryeo and discuss important matters between the two countries.
Later, in 1117, he held more high-ranking positions, such as Jwasangisangsi and Chumilwondongjisa.
In his final year, 1122, he was Ibusangseo, Chamjijungsa, and Hobupansa. He passed away that same year when he was 56 years old.
