History of Warnervale

In 1915, Albert Hamlyn Warner and his son Leslie advertised land in the region for sale. The railway platform is labelled "Warnervale".

For thousands of years, Aboriginal people lived on this land. Today, the Darkinjung Land Council helps manage Aboriginal land rights in this region.

In 1825, a man named William Timothy Cape was given land in this area. He was the headmaster of Sydney College and later a member of the government. Because of his busy jobs, he didn't spend much time on his property here.

Later, in 1875, William Alison bought the land. His home is now the site of the Wyong District Museum in Wyong.

Warnervale gets its name from Albert Hamlyn Warner. In 1893, he bought a very large piece of land, about 12,000 acres (4,900 hectares), in the area. Albert Warner was very inspired by his trips to Japan. His son Leslie also traveled to the United States. You can still see this influence in the names of roads in nearby suburbs, like Minnesota, Virginia, Louisiana, Hiawatha, and Nikko. Albert's family home, 'Hakone', located by the Wyong river, was named after a park he had seen in Japan.

The Warnervale railway station first opened in 1907. Warnervale was officially recognized as a village in 1975. Its suburb boundaries were set in 1991. In 1998, the suburb was divided into smaller areas, creating new suburbs like Halloran, Wallarah, Woongarrah, and Hamlyn Terrace.

This area used to have many large farms and important wetlands. However, it has quickly been developed into many new housing estates.

Future Plans for Warnervale

Around the year 2000, people started planning a big commercial area in Woongarrah, near the railway. This area was called the Warnervale Town Centre. Woolworths planned to build a new shopping center there, and a new railway station was also planned. A road was built to the proposed site, called Woongarrah Road.

However, as of 2022, the shopping center has not yet been built. New plans now suggest a smaller shopping center. Also, there is no longer a plan to build a new railway station at that spot.

Community Facilities

Warnervale Public School was first built in 1953 at 75 Warnervale Road. In 2008, the school moved to Hamlyn Terrace, but it kept the Warnervale name. Because more families moved into the area, the New South Wales Government bought the old school site back. A new school, called Porters Creek Public School, opened there in 2022.

Several other schools have also been built nearby to serve the many young people in the area. These include MacKillop Catholic College and Lakes Grammar.

Warnies Cafe is a popular spot located in a building next to the railway station. This building is considered a heritage site, meaning it's old and important to the area's history. It used to be a private home and a general store.

Sports and Recreation

The Warnervale Wildcats Sport Club offers many fun activities for both kids and adults. You can join teams for rugby union, netball, and cricket. It's a great way to stay active and meet new friends.

Getting Around: Transport

The Warnervale train station is on the Main North railway line. Trains from the Central Coast & Newcastle Line of the NSW TrainLink network stop here. This allows people to travel easily between Newcastle and Sydney.

Famous People from Warnervale

From 1988 to 1989, the American actor Matthew McConaughey lived in Warnervale for one year. He was here as part of an exchange program.
