Warrel Dane trained for five years as an opera singer. This helped him use a very wide range of notes in his singing. He could sing very low notes and also very high notes.

His high singing style was heard a lot in the older Sanctuary albums. He also used it sometimes in his band Nevermore. Sanctuary's album The Year the Sun Died, released in 2014, also featured some of these high vocal parts.

Warrel Dane also lent his voice to a character. He voiced Candynose Twinskins in the musical comedy Metalocalypse. This show was on Adult Swim.

His first solo album was called Praises to the War Machine. It came out on May 13, 2008, through Century Media Records. At the time of his death, he was working on a second solo album. He said this new album would be very heavy. The album was going to be named Shadow Work.

Musical Inspirations

Warrel Dane was inspired by many famous bands. Some of his musical influences included Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and The Beatles. He also liked Jefferson Airplane, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Doors.

For his singing style, he looked up to other great vocalists. His main vocal inspirations were Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, George Strait, and Bruce Dickinson.

Warrel Dane's Passing

Warrel Dane passed away on December 13, 2017. He was 56 years old. He was in São Paulo, Brazil, at the time. He was working on his second solo album, Shadow Work.

His band's guitarist, Johnny Moraes, shared what happened. He said Warrel Dane had a heart attack during the night. Emergency services arrived quickly, but sadly, he had already passed away.

His Legacy and Tributes

One month after Warrel Dane's passing, a special tribute was released. On January 14, 2018, Brazilian director Daney Carvalho released a short film. The film was called O Ano em que o Sol Morreu. This title means "The Year the Sun Died" and refers to a Sanctuary album.

The movie was a drama and a way to honor Warrel Dane. It was first shown at a festival in 2016. The director decided to make it public after Warrel Dane's death. Warrel Dane had seen the movie before. He thought it was "great" and "terrifying."
