Warren's Gore is a very small area of land in Essex County, Vermont, United States. It's called a "gore" because it's an unincorporated piece of land. This means it's not part of any town and has very little or no local government. In 2020, only 2 people lived there! This was down from 4 people in 2010. Warren's Gore is part of the larger area around Berlin, New Hampshire.

History of Warren's Gore

Warren's Gore was first created on October 20, 1789. It was meant to be part of a town called Warren. The original plan included two separate areas of land: one became the town of Warren, and the other became the gore. These two areas were almost 100 miles apart, on opposite sides of Vermont!

It's still a mystery why these two distant pieces of land were put together. One idea is that the first piece of land for Warren town was quite small. So, adding the gore might have been a way to make the total land area bigger. Even though they were chartered together, the gore has always been treated as a separate place from the town of Warren.

Why the Name Has Changed

The place has been known as Warren's Gore for a long time. However, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names prefers not to use apostrophes in place names. This is because an apostrophe can make it seem like the place is owned by a person. Because of this rule, you might also see the name written as "Warrens Gore" or "Warren Gore" without the apostrophe.

Geography of Warren's Gore
