Waubee Lake is a small, beautiful freshwater lake located in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. You can find it about 2 miles (3 km) southeast of a town called Milford. Sometimes, you might see its name spelled incorrectly as Wabee, but the correct spelling is Waubee.
Discover Waubee Lake
Waubee Lake is a great example of the natural lakes found in the upper Midwest. These lakes were formed a very long time ago by huge sheets of ice called glaciers moving across the land.
What Makes Waubee Lake Special?
Like many other lakes in this area, Waubee Lake is a popular spot for people to live and visit. You'll see many vacation homes and houses built along its shores. However, part of the western side of the lake doesn't have houses. Instead, it borders peaceful farmland. If you want to launch a boat, there's a handy boat ramp on the upper east side of the lake.
Waubee Lake is also home to Camp Alexander Mack. This is a special place that serves as a Christian camp, conference center, and retreat center. It's run by the Church of the Brethren, offering a peaceful place for groups to gather and learn.
The Name Waubee
The name Waubee is thought to come from the Potawatomi Native American people. They had a camp in the area where the lake is now. The name "Wau-Be" was a common name among them. While this is a popular belief, there isn't an official record that fully confirms it.
Correcting the Name
The official government agency that keeps track of names for places, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), used to have Waubee Lake incorrectly spelled as Wabee Lake in their records. To fix this, a request was sent to the USGS to change the name to the correct spelling, Waubee Lake. This request was being reviewed as of February 2012.
