A Look Back: Wayne's History
Wayne started out with a different name! It was first called Freeport. In 1836, the village was planned out, which means its streets and lots were officially mapped. Another early name for the area was Prairie Depot. The name "Wayne" was chosen to honor Anthony Wayne, a famous American general.
The village officially became a village in 1836. A post office named Prairie Depot opened in 1852. Many years later, in 1927, the post office name was changed to Wayne, matching the village.

Population Changes Over Time
The population of Wayne has changed quite a bit over the years. In 1900, there were 815 people living in the village. The population went down for a while, reaching 578 people in 1920. Then, it started to grow again.
The village saw its highest population in 1960, with 949 residents. Since then, the number of people living in Wayne has slowly decreased. In 2020, the population was 841 people.
Wayne Public Library
The village of Wayne has its own public library. It's called the Wayne Public Library. In 2005, the library was very busy! It loaned out more than 97,000 items to people who had library cards. At that time, the library had over 39,000 books and more than 120 different magazines for people to read.
