Wayne Martin Messam (born June 7, 1974) is an American politician and former football player. He is currently the mayor of Miramar, Florida. He has held this job since 2015.
Before becoming mayor, Messam was a member of the Miramar City Commission. He was first elected to the commission in 2011. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Messam also owns a construction company. In 2019, he ran for President of the United States.

Early Life and Football Career
Wayne Messam was born in South Bay, Florida. His parents, Delsey and Hubert, came to the United States from Jamaica. His father worked as a farmer in the sugarcane fields of Florida.
Messam went to Glades Central High School in Belle Glade, Florida. After high school, he attended Florida State University. There, he played wide receiver for the Florida State Seminoles from 1993 to 1996.
College Football Achievements
Messam was part of the 1993 national championship team. This team won the top college football title that year. During his time at Florida State, he caught 62 passes. He gained 793 yards and scored four touchdowns.
He also competed in track and field for Florida State. In 1993, he ran in the 55-meter hurdles at the Atlantic Coast Conference indoor championships. Messam earned a bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems in 1997.
Playing for the Cincinnati Bengals
After college, Messam was not chosen in the 1997 NFL draft. However, he signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as a free agent. This means he was able to join the team without being drafted. He was released from the team later that year.
Political Career
Wayne Messam started his own construction company in 2007. His journey into politics began in 2011. That year, he was elected to the City Commission in Miramar, Florida.
Becoming Mayor of Miramar
In 2015, Messam ran for mayor of Miramar. He won the election, beating the current mayor, Lori Cohen Moseley. He received 38.5% of the votes. He was re-elected as mayor on March 12, 2019.
Messam also serves as the president of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials. This group helps local leaders who are Black.
Running for President in 2020
In early 2019, Wayne Messam thought about running for president. He officially announced his campaign on March 28, 2019. He wanted to become the Democratic Party's candidate for the 2020 United States presidential election.
His campaign raised some money, but it was not enough. He told Fortune Magazine that a lack of money made it hard for his campaign to get national attention. Messam did not qualify for any of the main Democratic debates. Because of this, he ended his presidential campaign on November 20, 2019.
