About the Song
The song "We Are Number One" has a fast beat. It uses a musical style called Ska. The music was created to sound exciting and a bit sneaky.
The Music Video Story
The music video uses clips from the LazyTown episode "Robbie's Dream Team." In the video, Robbie Rotten is the main bad guy. He tries to teach his "dream team" how to catch the hero, Sportacus. His team includes three actors who look like him: Bobbie, Tobbie, and Flobbie Rotten.
Robbie shows them different ways to trap Sportacus. These include a cage that drops from a tree and a hidden pit. He also tries a big butterfly net and a small fishing net. Robbie even uses banana peels to make Sportacus slip.
Most of Robbie's traps don't work. Often, Robbie or his team fall into their own traps!
One trick that works is a fake apple filled with sugar. Sportacus doesn't like sugar, so eating it makes him sleepy. Robbie and his team then put Sportacus in a cage. They take him to Robbie's secret underground hideout.
Robbie stays outside to set up a cannon. He plans to blast Sportacus out of town. But Stephanie and Stingy find Robbie's hideout. They use a periscope to send a real apple to Sportacus.
Sportacus eats the apple and gets his energy back. He breaks free from the cage. Then, he convinces Robbie's team to play sports with him!
Robbie watches them play and gets angry. He accidentally kicks a bucket, which triggers his cannon. Robbie gets blasted away on the cannonball! The video ends with his team falling into the pit they built. This shows how clumsy they are.
Online Fame and Memes
Two years after the episode aired, "We Are Number One" became a huge Internet meme. This happened because Stefán Karl Stefánsson, the actor who played Robbie Rotten, announced he had serious health issues.
A special fundraising campaign was started to help Stefán Karl. People who made funny videos and remixes of the song used them to spread the word about this campaign. The campaign raised a lot of money to help him.
To thank everyone, Stefán Karl did a live show online. He performed "We Are Number One" with the other actors from the video. This was uploaded to his own YouTube channel.
What are "We Are Number One" Memes?
The song became popular in September 2016. The first remix was uploaded to a YouTube channel called SiIvaGunner. It was disguised as a song from a video game.
Many other funny versions and remixes were made after that. Famous YouTubers like Grandayy made their own versions. Even bands like The Radioactive Chicken Heads made cover songs.
These memes often take the original music video and change it in funny ways. The titles usually start with "We Are Number One but..." followed by a list of changes. For example, "We Are Number One but it's 1 hour long." Sometimes the titles were so long they had to be put in the video description.
This type of remix was very common in 2016. Many people thought "We Are Number One" was the "Meme of the Decade" for 2010-2019.
Other Official Versions
The official LazyTown YouTube channel also posted different versions of the song. They shared an hour-long loop of the original song. There was also an instrumental version and a reversed instrumental version. They even replaced every "one" in the song with another LazyTown song called "The Mine Song." The full episode "Robbie's Dream Team" was also uploaded.
Eurovision Petition
Some fans started a petition to have Stefán Karl perform the song at the Eurovision Song Contest. This is a big music competition. Over 12,000 people signed the petition.
They wanted him to be in the 2017 contest. However, Stefán Karl did not apply. He said that getting better from his health issues was more important. Stefán Karl sadly passed away on August 21, 2018.
