Webb City is a small town in the northwest part of Osage County, Oklahoma, in the United States. It's not officially part of a city government. In 2020, 58 people lived there. This was a decrease from 62 people in 2010, and 95 people in 2000. The town was named after its founder, Horace Webb, who owned the land where it was built. The Webb City post office first opened on December 16, 1922.

Webb City's Story

Horace W. Webb came from Missouri and settled near Grainola, Oklahoma in 1910. He bought more land and started the first school in the area. Webb City became an official town on his land in September 1921. The town's post office opened about a year later, in December 1922.

Oil Boom and Early Challenges

Webb City was at the northern end of the Burbank Oil Field, which was found in 1920. All the rights to minerals in Osage County belonged to the Osage tribe of American Indians. In 1924, the Osage Railway built a train line through the town. This line connected Shidler and Lyman, Oklahoma. Even though the oil discovery brought some money, Webb City never became a modern town. Water was hard to find, and there was no electricity. The main street for businesses was not paved, and most buildings were simple wooden structures.

Decline of the Town

The town started to shrink in the late 1920s as the oil boom ended. In 1928, a tornado caused a lot of damage. Many businesses did not rebuild after the storm. The town continued to decline during the Great Depression. Its high school closed in 1944, and students began going to school in Shidler. The elementary school also closed in 1956, and its students went to Shidler as well. The Osage Railway line was no longer used after 1955.

The first official count of people in Webb City was in 1930, showing 493 residents. After that, the number of people living there kept going down.
