Webster's Past: A Look at Its History

Webster was started in 1851. It was chosen to be the first county seat for Jackson County. This meant it was the main town for government and business.

However, a big fire and the fact that the railroad didn't come to Webster changed things. The nearby town of Sylva, which had the railroad, grew much faster. Because of this, Sylva took over as the county seat in 1913.

Webster used to have a courthouse and many shops. Today, not many of those old buildings are left. They are a reminder of its busy past.
