Weeden Butler the Younger (born in 1773, died in 1831) was an English church leader and writer. He followed in his father's footsteps, who was also named Weeden Butler.
About His Life
Weeden Butler the Younger was the oldest son of Weeden Butler, a respected church leader. His brother, George Butler, also became famous. Weeden Butler the Younger was taught by his father at home.
In 1790, he went to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He earned his first degree in 1794 and a master's degree in 1797. In 1796, he became a deacon, which is a step in becoming a priest. He worked at St. Michael, Crooked Lane in London. In 1797, he became a priest.
Butler later became a lecturer at Charlotte Street Chapel in Pimlico. He also taught evening classes in Brompton starting in 1811. In 1816, he became the rector (head priest) of Great Woolston, a church in Buckinghamshire.
For 19 years, Butler helped his father teach at their school. The school was located in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. When his father retired in 1814, Weeden Butler the Younger took over the school. A famous student named Isambard Kingdom Brunel attended the school that year.
Weeden Butler the Younger passed away in Cheyne Walk on June 28, 1831.
His Writings
Weeden Butler wrote and published several books and translations. Here are some of his works:
- Bagatelles; or miscellaneous productions, consisting of Original Poetry and Translations, published in London in 1795. This book contained his own poems and some translations.
- Prospect of the Political Relations which subsist between the French Republic and the Helvetic Body, published in 1794. This was a translation from a French book by François-Rodolphe de Weiss. It looked at the political connections between France and Switzerland.
- The Wrongs of Unterwalden, published in 1799.
- Zimao, the African, published in 1800 and again in 1807.
- The Warning Voice. A Sermon Preached at Charlotte Street Chapel, Pimlico ... November 19, 1817. This was a sermon he gave after the death of Princess Charlotte of Wales.
His Family
In 1805, Weeden Butler married Annabella Dundas Oswald. They were married in Chislehurst, Kent. Their oldest son, also named Weeden, was born in 1806. They had another son and three daughters who lived to be adults.
