History of Weikel
The community of Weikel was started in 1914. It was created by a company called the North Yakima and Valley Railway Company. They built a railroad line through this area.
Weikel was named after a man named George Weikel. The railroad company bought some of his land. They needed his land to build their train tracks. This land was called the "rail right-of-way."
George Weikel moved to Yakima in 1877. He helped to build an important water system. This system was known as the Tieton canal. On some old maps, the name of the community was spelled differently. It was sometimes written as 'Wiekel'.
