The Weißeritzkreis was a district (a type of region) located in the south of Saxony, a state in Germany. It was right next to the country of the Czech Republic. This district was created in 1994. It was formed by joining two older districts, Dippoldiswalde and Freital.
In August 2002, the area faced a very big flood. The river Weißeritz had to carry much more water than it normally does. Many buildings, roads, and bridges in the river valley were sadly destroyed by the powerful water.

Understanding the Weißeritzkreis Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for Weißeritzkreis tells a story about the district. The two blue wavy lines stand for the two Weißeritz rivers. These rivers eventually join together into one. At the bottom, you can see a symbol for mining. This shows the long history of mining for ore and coal in the nearby Ore Mountains. The green tree represents the many forests found in the district. On the right side, there is a lion. This lion is a special symbol of Meißen, because this area was historically part of the Margraviate of Meißen.
