Wellstead is a small country town in Western Australia. It's located in the Great Southern area. You can find it between the cities of Albany and Esperance.

About Wellstead

Wellstead is a quiet rural community. It's known for its farming. The town is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes.

A Bit of History

Wellstead got its name from the Wellstead family. They settled in this area way back in 1860. The family owned land for grazing animals. This land stretched between Cape Riche and Bremer Bay.

In the 1960s, more farmland was opened up. People started growing cereal crops here. A special area was set aside for a new town. Wellstead officially became a town in 1965. This happened soon after a telephone exchange was built.

John Wellstead was still living here in 1881. He sold 700 cattle in Albany that year. John died in Albany in 1896. But his sons, including John Jr., kept the family's farming business going.

What Grows Here?

The land around Wellstead is very good for farming. Farmers mostly grow wheat and other cereal crops. These crops are important for food.

The town has a special place called a receival site. This is where farmers bring their harvested grain. It's collected by a company called Cooperative Bulk Handling.
