History of Wellsville
Wellsville was first planned out in 1870. This means its streets and building lots were officially marked on a map. The town got its name from D.L. Wells, who was an engineer working on the railroad.
The first post office in Wellsville opened in October 1870. This made it easier for people to send and receive mail.
In 1894, a famous baseball player named Charlie Bennett had a serious accident in Wellsville. He was trying to get back on a train when he slipped and fell. He was badly injured and could no longer play baseball. Even though his career ended, he lived until 1927.
Geography and Location
Wellsville is located in the state of Kansas. The United States Census Bureau says the city covers a total area of about 1.40 square miles (3.62 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a very small part being water.

In 2010, the city of Wellsville had 1,857 people living in 722 households. A household is a group of people living together in one home. About 500 of these households were families.
