Wendy Barrie (born Marguerite Wendy Jenkins; April 18, 1912 – February 2, 1978) was an actress from Britain and America. She became well-known for her work in movies and on television.

Early Life of Wendy Barrie

Wendy Barrie was born in London, England. Her parents were English. Her father, Francis Charles John Graigoe Jenkin, was a lawyer. Her mother was Ellen McDonagh. Wendy went to a convent school in England. She also attended a finishing school in Switzerland.

Wendy Barrie's Film Career

In 1932, Wendy Barrie started her acting career in a movie called Threads. She then made several films with the Korda brothers, Alexander and Zoltan. One of her most famous early movies was The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933). In this film, she played the role of Jane Seymour.

In 1934, she acted in Freedom of the Seas. The next year, she moved to the United States. Her first Hollywood movie was It's a Small World (1935). She starred with Spencer Tracy in this romantic comedy. She also appeared in Under Your Spell. In 1936, Wendy Barrie starred with James Stewart in the movie Speed.

Later, in 1939, she was in The Hound of the Baskervilles. She also appeared with Lucille Ball in Five Came Back. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Wendy Barrie made several mystery films. These included movies from The Saint and The Falcon series. Her last movie was in 1954.

Wendy Barrie on Radio

Wendy Barrie also had a career in radio. She was part of The Jack Haley Show from 1937 to 1939. She helped on the Star for a Night program from 1943 to 1944. She was also a quizmaster on Detect and Collect from 1945 to 1946.

In 1956, she hosted her own radio show called The Wendy Barrie Show. It was a disc jockey program in New York City. She also hosted a popular radio interview show until the mid-1960s.

Wendy Barrie on Television

When television became popular in the late 1940s, Wendy Barrie started working in this new medium. From 1948 to 1949, she hosted a show called Picture This on NBC. She also hosted a children's comedy show called The Adventures of Oky Doky. This show featured a cowboy puppet.

Wendy Barrie is best known for hosting one of the first television talk shows. The Wendy Barrie Show started in November 1948. It aired on ABC, DuMont, and NBC. The show ended in September 1950. This 15-minute program featured Wendy interviewing famous people. She also talked about fashion.

She continued to appear on TV in the early 1950s. She was a guest on many panel shows. She also became a spokesperson for products. She was the first saleswoman for Revlon on The $64,000 Question. Her promotion of Living Lipstick helped the product sell out across the country. Wendy Barrie also continued to work on local TV in New York City.

In 1954, a new version of The Wendy Barrie Show started. It was broadcast from Ohio. This show was part of a network formed by three television stations. Wendy Barrie's contract for this show ended in October 1954.

Wendy Barrie acted in more than 15 films in Britain. She also appeared in over 30 films in Hollywood. Her work in movies was recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Her star is located at 1708 Vine Street. It was dedicated on February 8, 1960.

Personal Life and Death

Wendy Barrie became an American citizen in 1942. She was married to David L. Meyer, a textile manufacturer.

She passed away in Englewood, New Jersey, in 1978. She was 65 years old. She had been unwell for several years after having a stroke. Wendy Barrie was buried in the Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.
