The West Branch Croton River is a smaller river that flows into the larger Croton River. You can find it in Putnam and Westchester counties, both in New York State. This river is an important part of the Croton River watershed, which is like a big bowl that collects water. It also helps supply water to the New York City water supply system, providing drinking water for millions of people.

Where Does It Flow?

The West Branch Croton River starts in Kent, a town in Putnam County. Its very beginning, called the headwaters, flows into Sagamore Lake.

From Sagamore Lake, the river travels about one mile southeast. It then reaches the Boyds Corner Reservoir. Here, its waters become part of the New York City water supply system.

After leaving Boyds Corner, the river continues to flow into the West Branch Reservoir. This reservoir is located in the town of Carmel, New York.

Joining Other Rivers

The West Branch then flows southeast into the Croton Falls Reservoir. This happens just before it crosses into Westchester County. At this point, it meets the waters of the Middle Branch Croton River. The Middle Branch's water first flows into the Diverting Reservoir before joining the West Branch.

After these rivers combine in the Croton Falls Reservoir, the West Branch flows a short distance on its own. Finally, it meets the East Branch of the Croton River. This meeting point, called a confluence, is where the main Croton River officially begins. This happens in Croton Falls, a small community in the town of North Salem, New York in northern Westchester County.
