The West Branch Pleasant River is a river in Maine, USA. It flows for about 36.1 miles (58.1 km). This river is a tributary of the Piscataquis River. It is located in Piscataquis County.

The river starts north of Fourth West Branch Pond in a place called Shawtown. From there, it flows for about 18 miles (29 km) around White Cap Mountain. Then, it travels another 18 miles (29 km) southeast. It joins the East Branch of the Pleasant River in Brownville.

The West Branch Pleasant River is known for some amazing natural spots. These areas are popular for outdoor activities. They also protect important parts of nature.

The Appalachian Trail Crossing

The famous Appalachian Trail crosses the West Branch Pleasant River. This crossing is located at a special place called The Hermitage Preserve. The Hermitage is in Bowdoin College Grant East.

The Hermitage Preserve is home to a very old forest. It has a grove of Eastern White Pine trees. This grove is about 35 acres (14 hectares) in size. It is one of the few remaining old-growth forests in New England. Old-growth means the trees are very old and have not been cut down.

Discovering Gulf Hagas Canyon

Just upstream from The Hermitage is a stunning place called Gulf Hagas. This is a 2.5-mile (4.0 km) long canyon. The river has carved this canyon over many years.

Inside Gulf Hagas, the river drops about 500 feet (150 m). This drop creates several beautiful waterfalls. It is a popular spot for hiking and enjoying nature.

National Natural Landmarks

Both Gulf Hagas and The Hermitage are very important natural sites. They are among the 14 National Natural Landmarks in Maine. These landmarks are special places recognized for their outstanding natural features. Gulf Hagas was named a landmark in 1968. The Hermitage received its designation in 1977.
