The West End is a lively area in Dundee, Scotland. It sits by the River Tay to the south. To the north is Blackness, and the city centre is to the east. This area is mostly a nice place to live. It has a main street called Perth Road. The main campus of the University of Dundee is also here.
Since 1998, the city has created a "Cultural Quarter" where the city centre meets the West End. This area is full of arts and science places. It has theatres, a science centre, and art galleries. The university's art and design college is also located here.
Cool Places to Visit
The University of Dundee is a big part of the West End. About 20,000 students study here. The area also has St Andrew’s Roman Catholic Cathedral. You can also see the Morgan Tower, an old building from the 1700s. It is now a pharmacy.
Further west, you'll find Blackness Library. This area, called the Sinderins, was once a main entrance to Dundee. Harris Academy, Dundee's oldest and largest high school, is also in the West End on Perth Road.
The university also has beautiful Botanic Gardens. These gardens are by the river, close to Dundee Airport. The university's life science buildings are on Hawkhill. They have special labs for important research.
What the Area is Like
The West End has many shops, cafes, restaurants, and hotels. But it also has lots of homes, especially as you go west. This area has traditionally been wealthier. It has many large houses built during the Edwardian period. Other parts of Dundee have more smaller homes. These were built for workers, especially those in the Jute industry.
Many students like living here because it's close to the university. The West End has seen a lot of "studentification." This means more students have moved into the area. This has given the university district its own special feel within Dundee. Students and local residents usually get along well. However, sometimes there are issues like parking or many students living in one house.
How the Area is Run
In 2007, the way Dundee City Council wards were organised changed. Now there is a large West End Ward. This ward was made by joining three smaller wards. The people who represent this area are called councillors. They are elected to help run the city. Currently, the councillors for the West End are Fraser Macpherson, Bill Campbell, Donald Hay, and Richard McCready.
