Website City of West Haven

West Haven is a city located in Weber County, Utah, United States. In 2023, about 24,014 people lived there. West Haven became an official city on July 1, 1991. It was formed by joining two older communities called Kanesville and Wilson.

The city is about 35 miles (56 km) north of Salt Lake City. It sits west of the Wasatch Mountains in northern Utah. The Weber River and Ogden River meet in the northeastern part of the city. West Haven shares borders with Ogden to the east and Roy to the south. To the west is Hooper, and to the north is Marriott-Slaterville. It is part of the larger Ogden–Clearfield, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area.

West Haven has a city park with a special historical monument. There are plans to build a River Parkway Trail. This trail will have a fishing bridge and a tunnel for walkers under 21st Street. It will also include picnic spots, places to rest, and interesting historical points. The goal is for this trail to connect with the Weber County Centennial Trail. The current mayor of West Haven is Rob Vanderwood. He started his term on January 1, 2022.

Geography of West Haven

West Haven covers a total area of about 10.2 square miles (26.3 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

History of West Haven

West Haven was created by combining two older communities, Kanesville and Wilson. Both have their own interesting histories.

Kanesville's Early Days

The first people to settle in the area that became Kanesville arrived in 1868. At that time, this place was known as Northwest Hooper. Kanesville got its name from Thomas L. Kane. The name was officially adopted in 1882 when a local church group, called an LDS Ward, was first organized there. Peter B. Peterson was the first leader of this church group.

The name Kanesville is still used today for Kanesville School. This school teaches students from kindergarten to sixth grade in West Haven. Until 2010, the larger church organization in the city was called the Kanesville Utah Stake. In October 2010, this stake was divided. A new group, the West Haven Utah Stake, was formed. The original group kept the Kanesville name.

Wilson's Beginnings

The community of Wilson, Utah, was established in 1854. It was named after four brothers from the Wilson family. These brothers started farming in the area in 1854. An irrigation company was set up in 1879 to help bring water to the farms. An LDS Ward was also organized in Wilson in 1882. Brigham Heber Bingham was its first leader.

The very first settler to live in the area that became Wilson was John Martin. He moved from Ogden in 1856. He was the first person to live west of the Weber River. The Wilson Brothers started farming west of the Weber River in 1854, but they lived in Ogden at the time. This history comes from the book, "Mormon John Martin" (copyright 1969 by Drucilla H. McFarland).

West Haven Becomes a City

After Kanesville and Wilson combined to form West Haven, the city began to grow. In 2002, West Haven installed a sewer system for the entire city. This was a big improvement for the community. In 1994, the city bought 40 acres of land to create a park. This park was then developed with fun playground equipment and fields for sports. There is also a special historical marker located in the park.
